Wolfspeed Watermain Extension Project Status Updates

Background

The Wolfspeed Watermain Extension project was born out of a need for the United States to expand its capabilities to create more American made products that are deemed critical to the US economy. This project will directly serve the Wolfspeed manufacturing site, along with other future corporations that will be established in the Chatham Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) site. In 2022, the State of North Carolina granted the City of Asheboro $55 Million to afford the design, management, and construction of the watermain. The watermain will extend from Asheboro and predominantly follow the US Highway 64 corridor to the CAM site and is slated to be completed in 2026. The City of Asheboro opted to deliver the project under the Design-Build model. A Design-Build team of Garney Construction with The Wooten Company as the engineer of record is collaborating with the City to delivery the project. HDR is serving as the project advisor to the City of Asheboro

Status:

The Design-Build team is on pace to have all necessary design documents and permits ready for a City Council review and consideration for approval in late 2024. Construction is expected to commence in early 2025.

The purpose of this project is to provide additional water needed for the Chatham Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) site which has a demand for finished water supply that is higher than what can be provided by Siler City at this time.

As this project is funded by the State allocation of $55 Million, there will be no rate increases due to this project.

Sufficient design for construction is expected to be complete in November 2024. Construction for all sections of this project is expected to be complete by January 2026.
