Administration
The Administration of the Asheboro Police Department includes the Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, and the Administrative Staff. Their responsibilities include the day-to-day operations of the agency, policies and procedures, and Administrative Investigations which ensure the citizens of Asheboro are provided a professional police service.

Chief of Police

Chief Mark Lineberry began his career in 1992 as a patrol officer with the Asheboro Police Department. He has served as a detective in the Criminal Investigative Division and was promoted to Sergeant in 2004. He served as a Detective Sergeant, Patrol Sergeant, and Master Sergeant until he was promoted to Lieutenant in 2008. He was promoted to Captain in 2013, Major on July 1, 2015, Lt. Colonel on April 1, 2017 and Chief of Police on October 2, 2019. Lineberry holds an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Randolph Community College and is a 2009 graduate of Administrative Officers Management Program (53rd Session) at NC State University. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Gardner-Webb University in December of 2015 with a BS in Criminal Justice.

Assistant Chief of Police

Assistant Chief Robbie Brown began his career with the Asheboro Police Department in 1995 as a patrol officer. He has served as a Detective in the Vice/Narcotics Division, Traffic Crash Investigator, Street Crimes Officer, K9 Handler, SWAT Team member and was promoted to Sergeant in 2007. He has served as a Detective Sergeant, Patrol Sergeant, Street Crimes Sergeant, and K-9 Sergeant until he was promoted to Patrol Lieutenant in 2012. He has served as the SWAT Team Commander, Internal Affairs Investigator, and Background Investigator. In July 2015, Brown was promoted to the rank of Captain and completed assignments in Support Operations and Field Operations. He was promoted to the rank of Major in July 2018 and Assistant Chief in October 2019.  Brown holds an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Randolph Community College, an Undergraduate Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from High Point University, and is a graduate of North Carolina State University's Administrative Officer Management Program (AOMP) 56th session. Assistant Chief Brown has received the FBI-Law Enforcement Executive Development Association’s Trilogy Award after successfully completing the following FBI-LEEDA courses: Supervisor Leadership Institute, Command Leadership Institute and Executive Leadership Institute.

Captain/Field Operations

Captain Jason Cheek began his career with the Asheboro Police Department in 2001 as a patrol officer. He has served as a Field Training Officer, Park Ranger, SRO (School Resource Officer), and a G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) Instructor in Asheboro City Schools. Cheek was promoted to Sergeant in 2009 and assigned to patrol. He was promoted to Lieutenant 2012, assigned as a patrol team watch commander, transferred to Special Operations in 2013 and commanded the CRT (Community Resource Team) and Traffic Enforcement/Accident Team. Cheek was promoted to the rank of Captain in July 2015 and commands Field Operations. He holds an Associate Degree from Randolph Community College, a Bachelor Degree from Gardner-Webb University, and a Master of Justice Administration degree from Methodist University. Captain Cheek is a graduate of AOMP (Administrative Officers Management Program) at NC State University.

Richard Thompson

Captain/Investigations

Captain Thompson was hired in October 1993 as a patrol officer, transferred to the Bike Patrol Unit from 1996, transferred to CID as a Detective. He was promoted to Sergeant in August 2003 and assigned to Patrol and later assigned as a Sgt. in Traffic and CID Units. He was promoted to Lieutenant in February 2008 and assigned to Patrol and later as Lieutenant in Criminal Investigations. Thompson was assigned in July 2015 over Special Services, CRT, Traffic, and SWAT Commander. He served 10 years on SWAT, a Background and Internal Affairs Investigator. Captain Thompson graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Gardner-Webb University in 2009, and the Administrative Officers Management Program (AOMP) from N.C. State University in 2010.

Jay Hanson

Captain/Support Operations

Captain Jay Hanson began his career in law enforcement with the Asheboro Police Department in 1998 as a patrol officer.  He later served as a Street Crimes Unit officer, Vice/Narcotics detective, K9 handler, SWAT team member, field training officer, general law enforcement instructor, and specialized firearms instructor. In 2008, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and served in both the Patrol Division and again in the agency’s Street Crimes Unit.  During this time, he also assumed the role of Internal Affairs investigator, as well as background investigator for police applicants. Hanson was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2013, where he served in the Patrol Division and later in the Criminal Investigations Division.  In 2019, he was promoted to the rank of captain and currently oversee the agency’s Support Operations Division. Hanson holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Appalachian State University and Master of Justice Administration from Methodist University.  He is a 2011 graduate of North Carolina State University’s 59th Administrative Officers Management Program.

The Asheboro Police Department's Executive Assistant is a civilian position, and is responsible for providing administrative and clerical support for the department which plays a vital role in our overall success. Executive Assistant Karen Henley supports the Chief of Police and Records Unit in their day-to-day operations.
